Thankfully these days there is a safe and natural alternative to the black stain achieved with PPD products. Jagua is a fruit from the Latin American Rainforest, it has been used for hundreds (if not thousands) of years by the Rainforest Tribes to decorate their skin with really amazing black body art. You have probably already seen this body art on many TV documentaries, like The Tribe (BBC), its possible that for some years people have actually assumed that the body art was permanent tattoos because they actually look so similar.

We are proud to be at the forefront of the new jagua body art industry! You can find out more about Jagua from our sister site JaguaTattoos.com The first Jagua Body Art website!

How To Spot ‘PPD’ When It Is Mis-Sold As A Safe Body Art Service Or Product, usually under the title ‘Black Henna’.

Stay Away From Products That:

Claim to be ‘Black Henna’

Have henna powder + coal tar dyes listed as part of their ingredients.

Have henna powder + metallic salts listed as part of their ingredients.

Have any of the names of PPD, as described above, in their ingredient listing.

Claim to be ‘Black Henna’ and have no ingredients listed

Advise you to possibly seek medical attention, steroid creme etc… in the ‘rare’ case of an allergic reaction.

Contain a greyish – purple coloured powder that you need to mix with water.

Advise you to mix with plastic/wooden utensils, avoiding contact with metals.

Stay Away From Any Service Offered Where:

The artist claims to be applying ‘Black Henna’

The artist advises against working on children.

The artist advises you that in very ‘rare’ circumstances some people ‘may’ be allergic to the product… and ‘may’ need steroid crème from the doctor/pharmacist

You can see the colour on the skin underneath the paste is turning black before your eyes

You can see the artist mixing greyish-purple powder with water and then putting it into an application cone or bottle

Be extra cautious when the artist is a street vendor in a tourist resort – most skin reactions take place 10-14 days after initial application. So usually the uninformed tourist is already on their way home before the itching starts, hence the irresponsible vendor never has any come back and continues to injure & scar countless more tourists, making money at their physical expense.

Don’t assume either, that just because an artist is working from a reputable department store, hair salon or beauty salon that their products are safe. A lot of stores operate concessions, and a lot of irresponsible artists have been known to use PPD in these stores. Always check the product out that they are using. Any reputable Temporary Body Artist will show you their product ingredient listing, and will also confirm that……. There Is No Such Thing As Black Henna!

If all this information hasn’t put you off and you are still considering using a product that contains PPD, then please read this New Scientist Breaking News report about the use of prohibited PPD in body art products. Stay away from PPD, it can seriously damage your health.

PPD is a commonly used abbreviation for the man made chemical dyes known as p-Phenyldiamine, p-Phenylenedimine, para-Phenyldiamine & para-Phenylenedimine. This dye does in fact stain the skin black. However it is very dangerous and illegal to use in any country where such safety legislation regarding cosmetic ingredients exists. It is strictly forbidden for use on the skin under European Cosmetic (Safety) Regulations. It is also forbidden for use on the skin by the FDA, in the USA.

It is illegal to use this substance on the skin for good reason. It is classified as an extremely toxic substance. It is dangerous to have any contact with the skin – it causes chronic excema, with raised lesions that lead to hyper-pigmentation & hypo-pigmentation. The more exposure to the product, the more extreme the reactions will be when they eventually take place. The chemical can also cause blindness, and is extremely harmful if ingested. It is also a carcinogenic.

People have been hospitalised from exposure to PPD both from direct contact on the skin from so called ‘Black Henna Tattoos’ and also from hair dyes.

This chemical is one of the coal tar dyes that was originally created for hair dye manufacture. It is still used in all manner of permanent hair dyes today. There is apparently no risk of PPD exposure to the skin, as all hair dyes are supplied with gloves to protect the skin on your hands, and the words ‘avoid contact with scalp’ to protect the skin on your head from contact with the chemical!

Please note, it is still legal in Europe and the USA to supply PPD in certain percentages in hair dye products – though given the serious risks involved with exposure we would advise that you check your hair dye ingredients for any PPD content before use.

Now that you’ve got a beautiful Henna Tattoo, it’s very important to look after it well to get the best possible results. Your Henna Design will be part of your skin for the next few weeks, so treat it gently with respect and it will look great and last for as long as it possibly can.

Do not pick your henna paste off early.

Do not get it wet during the first 12 hours or it will halt its colour development… and stay orange.

Avoid strong sun when the henna design is still developing (i.e. cover it up)

Avoid contact with bleaching chemicals such as household cleaning fluids, and chlorinated water in swimming pools.

Avoid saunas and steam rooms and these actively encourage your skins natural regeneration cycle

Avoid contact with abrasives such as exfoliating products etc…

When showering/bathing do not scrub your skin, just wash it gently with mild soap.

After showering/bathing do not rub your skin dry, pat it gently with a towel instead.

<align vspace="5" hspace="5" rel="attachment wp-att-66" title="‘Easy Mix’ Henna Product Application - Step 1"></align>Step 1

Apply a light and even coating of mehlabiya oil to the skin, covering the total area for the Henna Tattoo. Mehlabiya oil is traditionally used as a pre-henna application oil in The Middle East and North Africa, it makes the skin really smooth to work on, and has beneficial effects on the final colour result of the henna stain. It will also make a great contact for your transfer outline to adhere to,

<align hspace="5" vspace="5" rel="attachment wp-att-67" title="‘Easy Mix’ Henna Product Application - Step 2">Step 2</align>

Firmly press your transfer face down against the skin, taking care not to smear it on the skin as you go. Once in place gently tap it to make sure that all of the carbon design has transfered onto the skin. Have a peek under one corner of the transfer paper to check whether your transfer has printed properly. Once satisfied, carefully peel it away to avoid smudging the transfer print as you go.

<align vspace="5" hspace="5" rel="attachment wp-att-68" title="‘Easy Mix’ Henna Product Application - Step 3"></align>

Step 3

Squeeze the application cone gently, to release the henna paste, as you draw on the skin. Try to start at the top left hand side of the design (vice-versa if you are left-handed) to avoid smudging the henna paste as you work. Follow the transfer outline and fill in any solid areas as you go; don’t finish the outline first and then start over to ‘fill in’ as this will make it very difficult to avoid smudges as you work.

<align vspace="5" hspace="5" rel="attachment wp-att-69" title="‘Easy Mix’ Henna Product Application - Step 4"></align>

Step 4

Leave the henna paste on the skin for 2 hours to ensure that a good rich henna colour develops. Some of the henna paste may start to fall off, if it falls off by itself it will be fine, as it will only do so when it is fully dry. If you pick it off early, then your final colour won’t develop properly. After 2 hours you can brush away the remaining dry henna, revealing an orange colour. Don’t get it wet for 12 hours…

<align vspace="5" hspace="5" rel="attachment wp-att-70" title="‘Easy Mix’ Henna Product Application - Step 5"></align>Step 5

<align vspace="5" hspace="5" rel="attachment wp-att-70" title="‘Easy Mix’ Henna Product Application - Step 5">Over the next 2 days your Henna Tattoo will gradually develop into a beautiful ‘Burgundy-Brown’ colour. The final shade differs from person to person & according to the initial aftercare procedures. But if you leave your henna on to dry naturally for 2 hours, and then avoid contact with water for the next 12 hours, you will get the darkest henna colour possible with the Easy Mix henna product range.

Make sure the sticker is still securing the tip of the cone, keeping the henna powder out of the tip, ready for mixing with the hot catalyst solution (dry powder in the tip is very hard to mix into the paste and results in blocking the tip.) Then cut open the catalyst sachet & carefully pour hot contents into the henna cone. Then cut open the wide end of the henna cone ready to pour in the hot catalyst solution.

Step 3

Gently manipulate the henna cone, mixing the henna powder & catalyst solution together for 2-3 minutes. Taking care to ’smooth out’ any lumps of henna powder and to ‘work in’ any remaining liquid. When you are happy with the smooth consistency of the henna paste, remove the sticker and move the product up and down the cone for its final mix. Leave to stand for 4-6 hours before use.

Step 4

Cut the tip of the henna cone very close to the end, a small hole makes fine line work possible. If you prefer to work with a thicker line, then just cut a little more off the tip of the cone. Then gently squeeze the henna paste towards the tip of the cone, and use a rubber-band to seal up the wide open end of the cone. You can also use various tapes or a heat sealer to seal the back of the cone if you prefer.

This freshly prepared henna paste will give you beautiful consistant results for 3 full days from preparation. You can prolong the life of your henna paste by refrigerating it in between use, make sure that it is at room temperature before you use it, for client comfort.

HennaTattoos.com, ‘Easy Mix’ Fresh Henna Products Ingredients:

Henna - 100% Natural Henna Powder

Catalyst - Aqua, Citric Acid, Cloves, Tea, Preservatives (E233, E212)

Pre Application Oil - Mehlabiya

Our Easy Mix, Fresh Henna kits contain everything that you need. You simply heat up the liquid catalyst sachet and then pour the contents into the pre-filled henna cone, manipulate the cone to mix the henna paste and then leave it to activate for 4-6 hours before use. The catalyst does not contain any essential oils, so this mix is perfedtly safe to use on children, pregnant women and even people with sensitive skin. While working on pregnant women, children and people with sensitive skin do not apply the pre application oil, Mehlabiya (it is advisable to avoid all oils on pregnant women). Always have your ingredients list available for your clients to read, and take time to discus the ingredients with anyone who is concerned about the product that you are using.
